LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE FEATURES)--March 1, 2002--Floyd Ackerman of Las Vegas receives weekly meals from the area's Meals On Wheels program. But yesterday he got a special delivery. When Ackerman answered his door, Larry Foyt of the Foyt/Harrah's Racing Team was there to bring him his meal -- in his No. 14 Chevrolet Monte Carlo racecar.
The delivery was to highlight Harrah's Entertainment, Inc.'s announcement that it is a prime national corporate sponsor of the Meals On Wheels Association of America's "March For Meals" campaign, a nationwide initiative to end senior hunger.
To kick off Harrah's national sponsorship of the first annual campaign, Harrah's headquarters employees cheered on NASCAR Busch Series driver Larry Foyt as he delivered meals to several area seniors in his racecar. Jan Jones, Harrah's Entertainment Senior Vice President of Communications and Government Relations, and Meals On Wheels Association of America President-elect Linda Netterville were also present for the event.
"We're proud to be the national sponsor of this crucial March For Meals initiative to bring attention to the serious matter of seniors in need," said Phil Satre, Harrah's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. "We believe our network of 25 casinos in 12 states can help Meals On Wheels spread its message that no senior should go to bed hungry."
The first annual "March For Wheels" campaign celebrates the 30th anniversary of America's senior meal programs, which were established in March 1972 with the reauthorization of the federal Older Americans Act. Today, there are more than 4,000 senior nutrition programs in operation throughout the country. In the past 30 years, these Older Americans Act programs have served more than 6 billion meals. The national campaign aims to raise awareness about senior nutrition and the needs of seniors in every community and to encourage citizens to donate volunteer time or money to their local Meals On Wheels program.
Harrah's sponsorship follows the Company's donation of a refrigerated Meals On Wheels delivery van to Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada in November. In addition, Harrah's Lake Charles donated a Meals On Wheels van in that Louisiana community. Harrah's will promote "March For Wheels" at its properties and encourage employees to volunteer with local Meals On Wheels programs.
"The combined strength of Harrah's, Larry Foyt and the Meals On Wheels Association of America, a nationally recognized and respected senior organization, will help the message about seniors in need reach a much larger audience," said Gary Loveman, Harrah's Entertainment President and Chief Operating Officer.
"Meals On Wheels has always been about cooperative efforts, about combining energy and resources within local communities to meet the needs of local people," said Linda Netterville, President-Elect of the Meals On Wheels Association of America. "The Meals On Wheels Association of America is pleased to welcome Harrah's and Larry Foyt to our team. As a result of their sponsorship, we will move closer to our goal of ensuring that not one senior in this country goes to bed hungry -- not just here in Las Vegas, but throughout the country.
"Our new partnership will help us take the March For Meals message to a large audience," Netterville said. "It will also help the Meals On Wheels Association of America assist meal programs across the country bring services to those who otherwise would not get nutritious meals. That's what this partnership is really all about."
According to Meals On Wheels Association of America, more than 13 percent of Americans are older than 65, and that number is projected to jump to 20 percent by 2030. The organization reports its services are already stretched, as four out of every 10 Meals On Wheels programs have waiting lists for seniors in need of meals. While some funding for the local meal programs comes from government sources, private donations and contributions comprise the majority of the programs' finances.
Foyt will aid Harrah's nationwide effort by donating money for each lap he completes during the 2002 racing season and by making public appearances at Harrah's casinos to promote "March For Wheels." Foyt's Busch Series car will also display the "March For Wheels" and the Meals On Wheels Association of America logos.
"Nationally, Meals On Wheels programs serve more than one million meals a day and without it hundreds of thousands of seniors wouldn't receive the nutrition they need to maintain good health," Foyt said. "I'm proud to race for a sponsor that is committed to our communities and our seniors, and I'd like to commend all the Meals On Wheels drivers for the invaluable work they do in the race against hunger."
In March, Harrah's executives, Larry Foyt and his legendary father and "Driver of the Century" A.J. Foyt will join Members of Congress and Meals On Wheels Association of America executives on Capitol Hill to officially commemorate the 30th anniversary of senior meal programs with the Washington kick-off of the March For Meals campaign.
