Workplace Safety to Be First Focus of Center for Business and Public Policy

Itasca, Ill. -- The National Safety Council (NSC) is pleased to join the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University in announcing the establishment of a Center for Business and Public Policy, the initial focus of which will be workplace safety.

The center is the culmination of nine months work following the Workplace Safety Summit cosponsored last March by the National Safety Council. The Summit brought together corporations, nonprofits, government, labor, activists, and academia to debate the many facets of workplace safety and explore ways to make it a national priority.

The Georgetown Center for Business and Public Policy has set an ambitious agenda for itself, and has committed to the following activities:
Hosting an annual Workplace Safety Summit;
Providing a clearinghouse of safety information, including web-based resources;
Hosting seminars and conferences on workplace safety, including a Seminar Series on Business Ethics focused on workplace safety;
Establishing a graduate-level MBA course on workplace safety; and
Developing an executive workplace safety education program at the Center.

Christopher P. Puto, Dean of the McDonough School of Business, and Professor John Mayo, PhD, Director of the Center for Business and Public Policy, made the announcement today at a Georgetown University press conference. National Safety Council Vice President Bobby Jackson was among the press conference speakers. Jackson said, *The Council is pleased to have taken part in the establishment of this vital Center. We will continue to wholeheartedly support its agenda as it works toward solutions to workplace safety issues.*

The National Safety Council, founded in 1913, was chartered by the U.S. Congress in 1953. Among its objects and purposes is *to organize, establish, and conduct programs for the education of all persons in safety methods and procedures.* With 37,500 member organizations and 50 local and regional chapters across the country, the National Safety Council is the nation*s leading health and safety organization.

Calls for the establishment of the Center for Business and Public Policy reached a crescendo after Georgetown*s McDonough School of Business hosted a Workplace Safety Summit last year-the first national event of its kind. The second Annual Workplace Safety Summit will be held at the Center for Business and Public Policy on April 11 and 12, 2002.
