WESTWAYS Features Corwin on the Huntington; Author Savors Pastoral Reserve That is an Oasis of Cultural Riches
LOS ANGELES--March 1, 2002--WESTWAYS readers get treated to "An Abundance of Riches" at the Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens with an essay by the country's foremost radio dramatist and writer, Norman Corwin. The magazine's March/April issue features Corwin's essay about his personal love affair with the gardens, galleries and gems of the library such as the Gutenberg Bible, the rare Chaucer materials and the second-largest cache of Shakespeare in the Americas.
Corwin, 91, extols the bird paintings by John James Audubon, and of course, the oil paintings, "Blue Boy" and "Pinkie" for which the Huntington is noted. Longtime Auto Club staff photographer Todd Masinter took the accompanying photographs.
WESTWAYS also presents Legislative Update highlighting Prop. 42 on the March 5 ballot. If passed, the measure would direct all the state's share of gasoline sales taxes to transportation projects.
The Auto Club supports Prop. 42, a constitutional amendment, because it reverses the diversion of funds away from California's vital transportation systems. It also helps reduce traffic congestion, improve safety and enhances the quality of life in Southern California.
WESTWAYS Travel Editor Elizabeth Harryman and columnist Paul Lasley share strategies for finding a great travel agent in Travel Smart. Even though the pair has written about the travel industry for 17 years, they regularly use a travel agent. Enlisting a travel agent to research airfares, book flights and hotels and even recommend outstanding restaurants can save time, according to Harryman.
In Overdrive, columnist Peter Bohr follows up with another column on grades of gasoline after mail poured in with more questions about selecting the proper grade of fuel for a particular car or truck.
The March/April WESTWAYS also offers a look at some of the coolest and safest entry-level vehicles for high school and college grads. The magazine also previews the Grand Prix of Long Beach, dream cars in a new hardcover book and the egg-shaped GEM motorcar.
Off-Ramp features the headquarters for Van de Kamp's Holland Dutch Bakery, circa 1939 and a view of the same location today. The 1939 picture is from the Auto Club's Corporate Archives. WESTWAYS' readers will learn about the multi-gabled structure's new lease on life.
After Dark features highlights from the Museum of Neon Art's "Neon Cruise" and a special events calendar loaded with places to visit, including the 13th Annual Southern California Spring Garden Show at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa.
