Delphi Increases Responsibility on Next M-Class
STUTTGART, Germany, Feb. 28 -- Delphi Automotive Systems has won a substantial increase in responsibility for the next Mercedes-Benz M-Class. Following its successful support of the current M-Class programme, Delphi has been commissioned to develop and supply a new cockpit module, with a significantly higher technology content, for the next-generation vehicle. The total contract value will be more than double that achieved for the current model.
Delphi will also supply a complete vehicle wiring system with integrated electronics and a Satellite Digital Audio Receiver System (SDARS) to provide access to more than 100 digital-quality satellite radio stations for U.S. market vehicles.
``Our excellent performance supplying cockpit modules and other technologies for the current M-Class was clearly a significant factor in DaimlerChrysler's decision,'' says Albrecht Manz, Delphi's customer director for DaimlerChrysler - Europe. ``They were impressed by the high standards we have achieved in quality, delivery and engineering, and by our expertise in supporting a truly global programme.''
The cockpit module integrates the instrument panel and console; steering wheel and column; airbags; heating ventilation and air-conditioning system; entertainment system and various other electric / electronic subsystems. Delphi will build modules sequenced in line at a facility in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, U.S.A., near the Mercedes-Benz US International (MBUSI) plant.
As well as simplifying MBUSI's manufacturing and logistics operations, Delphi's cockpit module technology will help ensure high build quality, allow Mercedes-Benz to offer its customers additional options, and help facilitate the rapid development of future model derivatives. The Delphi Manufacturing System is being used to introduce new production systems that further reduce costs and increase manufacturing flexibility.
Development of the new module is being carried out at Delphi's Cockpit Module Integration Centre in Wuppertal, Germany, and Delphi will be responsible for selecting and managing most of the second-tier suppliers. ``We have complete responsibility for this part of the vehicle,'' comments Manz.
Delphi will also supply the complete vehicle wiring harness, including body computers with integrated sensors, and front and rear bussed electrical centres. ``DaimlerChrysler defined the functionality that they wanted to achieve and asked us to propose the best solution. The decision of DaimlerChrysler to have a single supplier for an integrated electrical / electronic solution demonstrates a high level of confidence in Delphi,'' says Jose Maria Alapont, president of Delphi Europe, Middle East and Africa
``Together with the cockpit module, this is another area where DaimlerChrysler recognised our ability to use technology and innovation to enhance both products and manufacturing processes. We are delighted to be supporting DaimlerChrysler in the development of this prestigious new vehicle. Our considerable increase in technology and content is a compliment to everyone involved in the M-Class programmes,'' Jose Maria Alapont added.
