ZETEC ENGINE PACKAGES GENERATES EXCITEMENT
ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. (February 25, 2002) - One of the key components of any
successful race car is the engine. Beginning in 2002 the Formula Ford 2000
Zetec Championship will be using what many believe will be the premier
package for a training series, the 2.0-liter Ford Zetec engine with a Pectel
engine control unit.
Built by Elite Engines in Wisconsin and Quicksilver RacEngines in Maryland,
the package features a significant leap technology-wise from the Pinto
engine, which had been used since the class inception in the 1970's.
"This new engine package is very exciting," said Elite Engines owner Steve
Knapp. "The kit took a little longer than expected, but I think people will
be really impressed with the final product."
A primary reason for the introduction of the Zetec package was the increase
in reliability and durability. After extensive pre-season testing, by both
the series and various teams, the engine has exceeded all expectations.
"The durability and performance of this engine is astounding," said
Shamlian. "When you look at an engine that has greater than 2000 miles on
it, the general wear and tear on it is unapparent and the loss in torque and
horsepower is negligible. We have even seen an engine which was operated
well outside the heating limits with no significant damage occurring."
In addition to the reliability, the engine has proved to be a great fit to
the Zetec Championship, with both new and returning drivers impressed with
its operation.
"The engine is so smooth to drive," said Mark Wilkins, the 2001 Canadian
Formula Ford runner-up. "Moving up from Formula Ford 1600 it's a big change.
You've got a lot more power and torque. You really notice how it pulls out
of the corner. I really enjoy driving it. This engine is the perfect next
step in the progression up the racing ladder."
"This engine is a big improvement from the Pinto," said Bryan Sellers, who
returns for his first full season in 2002. "From the very first time in the
car you notice how smooth and responsive the car is. With the large power
and torque bands this engine is very driveable. I think everyone who drives
one will love it."
The Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship, the choice of the world's best
young drivers, races at North America's premier tracks and events. The 2002
season commences March 14-15, at Sebring International Raceway, as part of
the prestigious 12 Hours of Sebring.
