Kanaan Completes 2002 CART Preseason Testing
With Full Week at Homestead Miami Speedway
HOMESTEAD, Fla. (Feb. 22, 2002) - Tony Kanaan and the #10
Pioneer-WorldCom/Mo Nunn Racing team concluded their preseason testing for
the 2002 CART FedEx Championship Series campaign with three consecutive days
on the Homestead Miami Speedway 2.2-mile road course and, unofficially, the
fastest time of the week.
Kanaan, who begins his fifth year on the CART circuit and his third with Mo
Nunn Racing March 10 in Monterrey, Mexico, logged 500 miles on the Homestead
circuit Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. He clocked a fast lap of 1 minute,
7.7 seconds today which, unofficially, was fastest among a slew of
competitors who also took to the test track, including Shinji Nakano,
Christian Fittipaldi, Bruno Junqueira, Kenny Brack, Michel Jourdain and
Jimmy Vasser.
Earlier in the week, Kanaan and his #10 Pioneer-WorldCom Honda-Reynard team
joined Mo Nunn Racing's Indy Racing League team, featuring Felipe Giaffone
in the #21 Hollywood-sponsored Chevrolet G-Force, on the 1.5-mile Homestead
oval. Kanaan logged 183 miles on the oval on Monday with a fast time of
26.3 seconds, then turned his focus on a full day of pit stop practice on
Tuesday. Giaffone logged 335 miles on the oval Monday and Tuesday with a
fast lap of 26.6 seconds in his IRL car on the final day. Giaffone, the
2001 Indy Racing League Rookie of the Year, opens the 2002 season next
weekend (March 2) at Homestead.
TONY KANAAN
"This must be what it's like in the 'real world' - a Monday-through-Friday
work week! No, actually, I know perfectly well that I am a very lucky guy
for getting to do what I truly love for a living. It was actually kind of
enlightening, getting in the car (at home in nearby Key Biscayne) every
morning and driving down the Turnpike to my 200 mph office. It was a very
productive week. I'm tired, but me and my guys just can't wait to start the
season. They've all been gone from home all week, but I know they can't
wait until we go down to Monterrey and start the season. We made progress
every time we went out. We got a lot of work done with Honda on the new
traction control that we'll be allowed to use starting at the first race. I
feel good. This could be our year. The guys all know it. We had an
incredible time doing pit stops all day Tuesday. We're ready to go in all
areas. But we're not getting carried away because there is a lot of luck
involved when it comes to winning races. But at least we're confident about
the things we can control on race weekends. I can't wait to start the
season."
MORRIS NUNN
"It's been a very productive week. It's a testament to everyone's hard work
that we logged so many miles and didn't have a single problem. That must
mean we're doing something right. The team leaves here feeling very
confident. Tony and Felipe did well on the oval our first two days here.
We did a lot of pit stop practice. Pit stops are going to be more important
than ever with the new rules CART has in place. The airjack has been moved
to the rear of the car, so pit stops take on a whole new configuration that
we had to get used to. We'll be making a mandatory number of pit stops each
race, so the stops are gong to be more important than ever. We had a very
successful day just doing pit stops. These last three days, among the many
other things we were working on, We now are allowed to use traction
control, so we got a lot of work done with Honda in that area the last three
days. Tony turned some consistent laps, and went fast when we wanted him
to. So I think we're in good shape. Better shape than we've been in at
this point since we started this team. Let the games begin!"
