THE LEGEND CONTINUES … hotVWs DRAG DAY, SWAPMEET &
VW DISPLAY - SATURDAY, MARCH 2 - IRWINDALE DRAGSTRIP
Irwindale, Calif. - - From the very same people who brought you those wonderful "Bug-Ins" at Orange County International Raceway … Irwindale Speedway and Dragstrip is proud to announce that "hotVWs Drag Day" has been scheduled for Saturday, March 2, 2002 at the well-known NASCAR motor speedway and NHRA 1/8-mile street-legal drag strip.
The last hotVWs Drag Day was held in 1983 at OCIR and that famed raceway closed later that same year. "Until now there never had been a suitable facility in the area for us to continue the event," said organizer Rich Kimball "We've chosen Irwindale as the perfect place to rekindle this event, and the response has been wonderful."
Confirmed "Bugnut" Kimball worked "… Doing anything they'd let me do … sweeping up, parking cars, anything," at the very first Bug-In organized by the legendary Vic Wilson in October of 1968 at OCIR.
A featured writer for hotVWs magazine for almost two decades, Kimball has been involved with the Volkswagen scene for "…Much longer than I care to admit." What he will admit is his enthusiasm for bringing his favorite event back to life at the Irwindale facility. "It's got all the bells and whistles, and its got to be the easiest race track to get to in the county … right next to a main freeway, just like OCIR!" In a fitting homage to the past the great "Dyno Don" Chamberlin will be on mike and doing the announcing at the show. Another original Drag Days alumnus, Chamberin's unmistakable voice will add yet another layer to the rebirth of this venerated event.
The day's agenda will include 1/8-mile drag racing on Irwindale's brand-new NHRA strip from 9am until 3pm, a super Swap Meet where hard-to-find vintage VW parts will be abundant easy-to-acquire and right alongside of the latest hop-up and beauty stuff for New Beetles, Bugs, Passats, Golfs, Jettas, and all manner of Wolfsburg wunderkind.
Irwindale's front gates will blow open at 7am for this one, with the show going on all day long and the drag racing happening between 9am and 3pm. Best of all is the low let's-get-back-to-1968 admission price of only 5 bucks for adults with kids under 12 FREE! A race entry or swap spot is only 10 bucks and parking is FREE! The Speedway is located in Irwindale right on the 605 freeway north of the 10 and south of the 210. For a personalized how-to-get-there map fans are invited to simply call up the Irwindale website (www.irwindalespeedway.com) and ask how to get there.
Just for the record, and to add a wee bit more vintage Volkswagen wistfulness, in addition to hotVWs magazine (which has been around "forever") the three major sponsors are: EMPI, Gene Berg, and KYMCO ... those names ought to bring back a few memories. They've got a webpage for info too: www.BugIn.com.
Nostalgia, Vintage, and the latest VW go-fast stuff, all side-by-side all day Saturday, March 2 at Irwindale Speedway and Dragstrip. Cool! hotVWs!
