Series: The USAR Hooters ProCup Series began with 3 exhibition races held
during 1996. Entering into the sixth year of competition, the series will
again be split into two divisions, Northern and Southern, for a schedule of
regional races then combine the top drivers from each division for a five
race championship series. More than 100 drivers and teams have registered
their intentions of racing in the ProCup Series for 2002. The 2002 schedule
is comprised of 32 races, 30 of which will be seen on Speed Channel on a
tape delay basis. In excess of $1 million is offered in the points
championship program with $250,000 to be awarded to the 2002 series
champion.
Cars: The ProCup cars are 3300 pound, 105 inch wheelbase, steel bodied
stock cars powered by normally aspirated V-8’s producing approximately 550
horsepower. The Ford Taurus and Chevrolet Monte Carlo are the prodominent
choice of make and model by many teams however several teams are
contemplating a change to the Dodge Intrepid. Many cars are now built
specifically to race on the ProCup tour but some cars have had previous use
in the NASCAR Busch Grand National Series.
Race: This event is the 101st USAR Hooters ProCup race and is the first
race of 2002 marking the beginning of the season for the Southern division.
Bobby Gill: The 3 time ProCup champion has 5 wins in 11 ProCup starts at
USA and 6 wins in 18 starts overall at USA. Bobby is just $8,800 short of
reaching the $1 million career earnings mark in the USAR Hooters ProCup
Series. With 58 starts, Gill is tied with Mario Gosselin in all-time career
win in the series at 18.
Hal Goodson: Hal Goodson teams with Jason Sarvis for a two car effort from
RBR Racing in 2002. Hal short tenure in the ProCup series has gained him 6
trips to the Winners Circle in 31 starts including 2 wins in the 2001
Championship Series.
Shane Huffman: With 4 wins in 2001 Huffman will sport a change in sponsors
on the number 84 with Jennie-O Turkey Store.
Steve Christian: The combination of Haskell Willingham and Steve Christian
is again set for the 2002 ProCup season. Christian collected both of his
career wins behind the wheel of the number 16 and is a previous winner of
the Alan Kulwicki Memorial Hooters 300 at USA.
Florida Drivers: David “Buggy” Pletcher will make his first start since
winning the Northern Series finale at Chemung Speedrome last September. The
second generation driver has also been very competitive at USA finishing
second by .001 second to another local Florida driver Derrick Kelley.
Kelley, who has 3 wins on his resume including 2 at USA, is also on the
pre-entry list. Billy Mowery, Keith Roggen, Luke Hill and Tony Amico join
the list of rookies entered in the race.
