FOR RELEASE: February 20, 2002GM de Mexico Begins 2002 With Record Sales - 26.7% Market Share
Mexico, D.F. - GM de Mexico (GMM) achieved all-time record sales of 24,978 units in January. GMM was the overall sales leader with a market share of 26.7% (or 23.4% growth versus the same month last year). GMM is seeking its eighth straight year of sales leadership in the Mexican market, which is experiencing one of the most dynamic periods in its history as it continues its rapid transition from a closed to open automobile market.
"The results are very positive for us. They are an outcome of the aggressive strategies that we are implementing with the cooperation and input of our dealers," said Martin Walsh, GMM director of Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing. "Those strategies, combined with new product portfolio entries, position us well in an incredibly competitive market"
In January, GMM achieved sales leadership in both the passenger car and truck segments with segment share of 25.8% and 29.1%, respectively. GMM is currently leveraging products from allied entities in eight countries, including the US, Canada, Germany, Spain, Belgium, Brazil, Argentina and Chile.
"At the end of 2001 we launched several attractive and innovative products such as the Zafira Eurocab and the Corsa," concluded Walsh. "The Zafira immediately dominated the monocab segment capturing 64.5% of the sales and Corsa has already proven to be a formidable competitor in the super-charged small car segment"
GMM is currently evaluating further improvements to its product offering in 2002. To combat the unprecedented increase in competitive offerings, attractive incentive programs coupled with a strong advertising strategy are key elements to retaining market leadership.
