Trade News: Agilent Technologies Introduces Series of LEDs for Automotive Interiors, Industrial Instruments and Electrical Appliances

    PALO ALTO, Calif.--Feb. 20, 2002--

New Family of LEDs Offer Industry-Standard Package, High Reliability and Fast Delivery at Competitive Prices

Agilent Technologies Inc. today introduced a series of LEDs (light-emitting diodes) used primarily for automotive interior lighting, and backlighting for industrial instruments and electrical appliances. The new family of LEDs are available in the widely used PLCC-2 surface-mount (SMT) package and offer manufacturers increased reliability with delivery in as little as four weeks.
Industrial instrument applications for the new LEDS include test equipment and industrial controllers, and typical electrical appliance applications include microwave and conventional ovens, washing machines and clothes dryers. This new family of LEDs provides a form and fit replacement for products from other major manufacturers, including TopLed products and other PLCC devices. The package design, coupled with careful selection of component materials, ensures high reliability over a wider operating temperature range of -55 C to +100 C, compared to the -30 C to +85 C provided by base SMT LEDs such as those in ChipLED packages.
"We are bringing Agilent's legendary quality and manufacturing ability to the industry-standard SMT PLCC-2 LED market," said Soo Ghee Lee, manager of Agilent's Optoelectronic Business Unit. "Our customers will benefit from increased reliability, wider operating margins, and aggressive lead times, all at economical prices."
These Agilent LED products are housed in a PLCC-2 SMT package with dimensions of 3.2 mm x 2.8 mm x 1.9 mm, and with a viewing angle of 120 degrees that is ideal for instrument, switch and icon backlighting. The package features an external reflector that makes it simple to couple with a light pipe or light guide to provide uniform illumination of large areas. Precision manufacturing techniques assure perfect pick-up by automated manufacturing equipment, and the combination of a bottom chamfer and precise lead formation eliminates stresses and provides an additional assurance of reliable performance after installation.

    Pricing and Availability

Agilent's PLCC-2 SMT LEDs are available in a wide assortment of colors and luminous intensities. They are priced as low as $0.10 each in contracted production quantities, and can be delivered within four weeks. The LEDs are shipped with EIA481-compliant standard packaging: 8 mm carrier tape on 7-inch diameter reel and sealed in moisture barrier bags.
Agilent expects to add bi-color and tri-color packages to its PLCC SMT LED family later this year. More information is available at www.agilent.com/view/led.
