ZETEC CHAMPIONSHIP TAKING SHAPE
ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. (February 20, 2002) - With less than a month to the
start of the season, the 2002 edition of the Formula Ford 2000 Zetec
Championship is starting to take shape.
The season-opener at Sebring International Raceway, March 14-15, in
conjunction with the Sebring 12 Hours, will feature a large group of rookies
and returning veterans battling for the championship. Currently, greater
than 25 cars are expected to take the green in the new Zetec class.
As in years past the world's best young drivers have chosen the Zetec
Championship to showcase their talent. Joining the championship in 2002 are
the Canadian Formula Ford Champion and Runner-up, Andy Brumbaugh and Mark
Wilkins; British Formula 3 front-runner, Jeffrey Jones; former SKUSA
National Champion, Bobby Wilson; SCCA Southeast Division Formula Ford
Champion, Lawson Aschenbach; SCCA Southeast Division Formula Continental
Champion, Ricardo Imery; SCCA Central Division Formula Continental Champion
Steve Thomson and SCCA Formula Ford National winners, Matt Green, Travis
Irving and Sean McIntosh. Returning stars to the championship include Team
USA Scholarship winner, Bryan Sellers; Tonis Kasemets, a three-time winner
in 2001 and Scott Rubenzer, 2001 American Continental Championship Champion.
Rumored to be joining this group are 2001 Russell/USAC Triple Crown Pro
Series Champion, Ross Fonferko; 2001 pole winner and 2000 ACC champion Tom
Dyer and second generation star Arie Luyendyk Jr.
"This looks to be the strongest field in series history," said series owner
Jon Baytos. "I'm looking forward to an exciting season long battle for the
championship."
Powered by the new 2.0-liter Ford Zetec engine, the Formula Ford 2000 Zetec
Championship will bring its action packed, exciting, close quarter racing to
North America' premier race tracks and events in 2002.
