Boats Are Automotive Too: Bombardier and Cousteau's Ocean Futures Society Partner Up to Power Research and Education
Evinrude Direct-Injection Technology and Johnson Four-Stroke Engines Support Organization's Key Objectives
MIAMI--Feb. 14, 2002-- Bombardier Recreational Products' Boats and Outboard Engine division, builder of Evinrude® and Johnson® outboard engines, today announced it has formed a strategic alliance with Jean-Michel Cousteau's Ocean Futures Society whose efforts promote global research and education directed at preserving the world's oceans. Through this alliance, Bombardier will be the exclusive provider of direct injection and four-stroke outboard power for the Ocean Futures Society's entire fleet of boats. Each vessel will be equiped with either Evinrude direct-injection engines, which are some of the most technologically advanced, low emissions outboards available on the market worldwide or Johnson four-stroke engines.
``We are pleased to be united with one of the industry's most prominent manufacturers focused on building products that support our overall objectives - preserving our world's water resources,'' said Jean-Michel Cousteau, Founder and President of the Ocean Futures Society. ``The Evinrude DI products being built by Bombardier, with their low emissions and overall cleaner technology, will enable us to use them to power nearly every research and educational need we expect to encounter. Coupled with their Johnson four-stroke engines, we now have the capability to use the best outboard tool for every application.''
Cousteau commented that the alliance with Bombardier was an opportunity to renew a relationship with Evinrude and Johnson outboards, which dates back to the early 1970's when his father, Jacques Cousteau, prominently used Johnson outboards to power his oceanic research efforts. Following in his father's footsteps, in the late 1990's when Cousteau launched the Ocean Futures Society, he selected Evinrude outboards to power his boats to capitalize on the many benefits DI technology offered.
``We felt compelled to renew our relationship with Evinrude and Johnson outboard engines for a variety of reasons, but strongly because we feel the direct-injection technology featured on Evinrude represents the future of two-stroke outboard engine power,'' said Cousteau. ``These DI outboards offer the performance advantages we are accustomed to, combined with low-emissions and superior fuel economy.''
``We're proud to have our Evinrude and Johnson outboard engines powering the global research and educational sponsored by the Ocean Futures Society,'' said Roch Lambert, Vice President and General Manager, Boats and Outboard Engines Division. ``It is a pleasure to be in the company of Jean-Michel Cousteau, as he and his staff work to preserve marine environments around the globe.''
``At Bombardier, we are committed to the continued development of innovative outboard engines and technologies that enable our products to deliver cleaner, lower emission products to help preserve the oceans of the world,'' Lambert added. ``As we move forward, the products we will be introducing will enable us to continue to deliver on that commitment.''
Ocean Futures Society is a non-profit organization resulting from a merger of the Jean-Michel-Cousteau Institute and the Free Willy Keiko Foundation. Ocean Futures Society's mission is to provide the global community with a forum for exploring issues affecting the ocean, its inhabitants, and is habitats. Ocean futures Society reaches out to people throughout the world, helping them to understand our global water system, take personal responsibility for the restoration and preservation of precious marine habitats, and mobilizing them to protect the ocean and its inhabitants.
