CART Spring Training - Test Day 2 of 2 - Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002
Laguna Seca Raceway - Monterey, Calif. - 2.238-Mile Road Course
Tony Kanaan and the #10 Pioneer-WorldCom/Mo Nunn Racing Honda-Reynard
wrapped up the on-track portion of the CART FedEx Championship Series 2002
Sneak Preview at Laguna Seca Raceway with the fourth- and ninth-fastest laps
of today's morning and afternoon test sessions.
Kanaan toured the 2.238-mile hillside road course near Monterey, Calif.,
with his weekend-best lap of 1 minute, 9.972 seconds (115.146 mph) this
afternoon, ninth-best overall during this afternoon's 2-1/2 hour session and
the fastest for a Honda-powered entry. He was poised to make a final
attempt at a fast lap with less than 10 minutes remaining, having taken on
his sixth and final set of new tires allotted for the weekend, but a
mechanical failure ended his day in the closing minutes. Cristiano da Matta
was fastest for the fourth consecutive session here this afternoon with a
lap of 1:08.981 (116.797 mph). Patrick Carpentier was second this afternoon
in 1:09.519 (115.893 mph), followed by Bruno Junquiera at 1:09.633 mph).
In this morning's 2-1/2 hour session, Kanaan's lap of 1:10.188 (114.789 mph)
was just outside the top-three of da Matta (1:09.231/116.376), Dario
Franchitti (1:09.720/115.559) and Oriol Servia (1:09.987/115.119). A total
of 20 competitors took to the track today.
The team resumes its preseason testing program later this month in Florida -
at Homestead and Sebring - before the 2002 opener at Monterrey, Mexico on
March 10.
TONY KANAAN
"We leave here feeling like we could've done a lot better, but with
everybody here at the same time, it's not the easiest thing in the world to
get a clear lap. That's okay. We were ready to give it one last try at the
end of the day today, but we had a mechanical problem and I never got to put
my last set of tires to work. We've definitely got some room for
improvement with our whole package. That's what testing is for - so we can
find those things out. We had a good comparison with everybody else here
this weekend. Now, we have to go back home and go to work."
