CART: #10 Kanaan Laguna Seca Saturday

TONY KANAAN

#10 Pioneer-WorldCom/Mo Nunn Racing Honda-Reynard
CART Spring Training - Test Day 1 of 2 - Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002
Laguna Seca Raceway - Monterey, Calif. - 2.238-Mile Road Course

Tony Kanaan and the #10 Pioneer-WorldCom/Mo Nunn Racing Honda-Reynard opened
the CART FedEx Championship Series 2002 Sneak Preview two-day test today at
Laguna Seca Raceway with a pair of 2-1/2 hour sessions. Kanaan recorded the
second-fastest lap in the morning and the 10th-fastest lap of the afternoon
on a sunny but cool day on the outskirts of Monterey.

Kanaan's lap of 1 minute, 10.316 seconds (114.580 mph) on the 2.238-mile
hillside road course this morning was surpassed only by Cristiano da Matta's
lap of 1:09.952 (115.176 mph). Kanaan completed just 22 laps during the
session as he, as did a majority of the 21 competitors testing today, waited
for the brisk morning temperatures to rise from the high-40s into the
mid-50s before running in earnest. Kanaan and his crew also stopped some 30
minutes before the end of the session to begin working on changes to the
Pioneer-WorldCom car for this afternoon's session.

They turned 50 laps during the afternoon run, trying a multitude of setups
and, all the while, opting to conserve tires. Kanaan's best afternoon lap
was a 1:10.495 (114.289-mph) effort.

The team used just two of its six allotted sets of tires for the weekend.
Testing concludes Sunday with a pair of 2-1/2 hour sessions.

The top three lap times of the day all came in the afternoon session, led by
da Matta (1:09.500/115.925), Alex Tagliani (1:09.545/115.860) and Patrick
Carpentier (1:09.687/115.614).

TONY KANAAN

"We had a fast car this morning. We had to wait a while for the temperature
to get just a little warmer, and the track was very, very green. I went out
for just one lap at the start of the session, just to see what the track was
like, and the track was very slippery. We tried a lot of things this
afternoon and learned a lot. We just stuck to our list of things that we
wanted to try, and we decided to save our tires for Sunday. You have to
understand that even though it seems like a race weekend, with all the teams
here, this is just a test. The time we're really going to want to go fast
here will be (race weekend) in June. Even so, things should look better on
the timesheets for us on Sunday."
