ARCA RE/MAX qualifying results, Daytona
YOUNG GUNS MONTGOMERY, VENTURINI, PONTIACS GRAB FRONT ROW AT DAYTONA
DAYTONA BEACH FL (2-8-02) After posting the quickest speeds in practice
all week here at Daytona Int'l Speedway, 18-year-old ARCA RE/MAX Series
rookie Chase Montgomery, in his father Ray Montgomery's Pontiac, did
what everyone thought he'd do - win the Old Milwaukee Pole Award for the
39th annual Discount Auto Parts 200 here Friday.
Montgomery's speed was 184.543 mph. "We've had a good car all week,"
said the Mt. Juliet, Tennessee driver. "The crew has put an insane
number of hours at the shop for the past few weeks to put a good piece
under me and it showed. And hopefully there's more of it to come."
Montgomery sat outside pole in ARCA RE/MAX Series competition in 2001 at
Lowe's Motor Speedway and Kentucky Speedway. Montgomery's career-best
RE/MAX Series finish was 5th last year at Kentucky.
Second-generation driver Billy Venturini, in his father Bill Venturini's
Sports Authority-Future Network Broadcasting Pontiac, qualified outside
pole with a speed of 184.215 mph. "It was pretty much a complete
surprise to me for us to run that good. We struggled all week. We came
here with a really good piece. We expected it to be different with the
car, and then we got here and then we struggled. We had some problems;
we had a spring that was binding up; we fixed that; and then we had a
little piece of junk in the carburetor. When we made those 2 changes, I
didn't know what we were going to have for qualifying. We went out, ran
fast. I was surprised, but it's about what I expected when we unloaded
off the trailer. I was more disappointed with the way we performed all
week. But that was no fluke - that lap. We didn't have any tricks up our
sleeves or anything like that. You'll see that in the next practices
because we're going to be fast the rest of the week. We came here with a
good piece and if you look at it, and know what you're looking at,
you'll know that we have a good car. We'll be there on Sunday."
Venturini's career-best RE/MAX Series finish was 3rd in 2001 at Kentucky
Speedway. His prior-best superspeedway qualifying run was 7th at Pocono
Raceway in 2000 and 7th at Gateway Int'l Raceway in 2001. Venturini's
father Bill is a 2-time ARCA RE/MAX Series champion (1987 & 1991).
