CTS Corporation Awarded Throttle Position Sensor Programs for Growing Small Engine Market in Asia
ELKHART, Ind.--Feb. 5, 2002--CTS Corporation , a world leader in automotive sensor and actuator technology, today announced that two major Asian manufacturers have selected CTS Automotive Products to supply throttle position sensors (TPS) for use in motorcycles and motor scooters that will be built and sold in Asia.Delivery of the production sensors has already begun. The initial, combined multiyear programs represent approximately $8 million in new business to CTS.
Motorcycles and motor scooters are an extremely popular mode of transportation in Asia, and usage continues to increase. Concerns over air pollution and global warming have prompted a number of Asian countries to implement exhaust emissions regulations for both motorcycles and motor scooters. An excellent solution to the implementation of the new regulations is using electronic fuel injection (EFI), a proven technology first introduced on passenger cars. The throttle position sensor is a key component of the typical EFI system, and CTS is the world's leading supplier of TPS sensors.
Anticipating the subsequent need for small engine applications, CTS has applied its extensive automotive experience to develop a new, smaller sensor that combined the proven performance and reliability of existing CTS designs in a package size and shape that meets the unique needs of the small engines required by the market. Further, CTS will produce the new sensors at its Taiwan facility to better serve the local customers.
Regional production, at a competitive price, combined with CTS' capability to provide local support, should enhance the Company's position to win a greater share of what is expected to be a $100 million annual market by 2005.
