VANCOUVER, Feb. 4 Cummins Westport Inc., a joint venture of Cummins Inc. of Columbus, Indiana and Westport Innovations Inc. of Vancouver, British Columbia, announced today that it has received an order for 70 low emissions natural gas bus engines for Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority.
The order is for the Cummins Westport C Gas Plus, an 8.3 liter engine rated at 280 horsepower. The 70 engines will be used in 40-foot (12.2-metre) low floor transit buses manufactured by Orion Bus Industries Inc. of Oriskany, New York, a unit of Daimler Chrysler Inc. The buses are scheduled for delivery later this year. The local Cummins distributor involved in the sale is Cummins South, Inc.
``This order for Atlanta, along with the general trend of strong sales for the C Gas Plus for transit buses and refuse haulers, continues to confirm our belief that this clean, technologically advanced engine is being very well received by fleet operators,'' said Guff Muench, President of Cummins Westport Inc.
Cummins Inc. is the world's largest manufacturer of commercial diesel engines above 50 horsepower. Westport Innovations is the leading developer of natural gas fuel systems for diesel engines. Cummins Westport Inc., formed in 2001, develops and markets low-emissions alternative fuel vehicle engines manufactured by Cummins.
