Woodside and Team Walker Motorsports Start 2002 With 4th
place Finish at Phoenix International Raceway
February 3, 2002 (Valencia, Calif.) - Sean Woodside and Team Walker
Motorsports started their 2002 season off right by powering the #45 NAPA
Filters/Ron's Rear Ends Chevrolet to a 4th-place finish in yesterday's
NASCAR Winston West Winter Heat presented by Bosch at Phoenix (Ariz.)
International Raceway.
The team also finished in 12th-place in the Featherlite Southwest Series
"100," which ran earlier in the day.
Woodside ran halfway back in the field during the opening laps of the
Winston West race after starting from fifteenth place. Changes made during a
pit stop under caution on lap 30 improved the car's handling, and Woodside
began taking a few positions. By lap 76, Woodside was running in 6th place.
The team took a little time during a pit stop on lap 76 to make some final
adjustments, then watched Woodside charge back through the field from a 14th
place re-entry. By lap 113, Woodside had retaken 6th place.
Woodside took 5th place on lap 147, then set his sites on the #77 car of
Greg Pursley, moving in quickly behind him. On the final lap, he took his
car low to duck under Pursley. The two made a side-by-side charge out of
turn four for the start-finish line, and Woodside overtook Pursley as they
crossed the stripe.
The team was pleased with its 12th-place finish in the Southwest Series
event, given that this was just their second attempt in the series. The
finish places the team near the top of the point standings after subtracting
the many entries who were not series regulars.
"It was great to leave Phoenix with a lot better start to the season than we
did last year. It looks like the changes we made were for the better."
In last year's season opener, the team's day ended early with engine
problems caused by a broken oil line.
Donna Walker, co-owner of Team Walker Motorsports, said, "We were happy to
do well in both races. The entire team was very encouraged. Now, we will go
back to the shop and lay out our plans for the rest of the year."
