Nissan Announces January Sales; Altima and Xterra Set Sales Records

GARDENA, Calif., Feb. 1 -- Led by strong results in the sedan category, the Nissan Division of Nissan North America reported sales of 49,549 units for the month of January, a 9.6 percent increase versus January, 2001.

The all-new Altima recorded its best January ever with sales of 13,682 units, a 28.3 percent increase versus January, 2001. Earlier in the month, Altima was named North American Car of the Year by 48 industry journalists who vote on the award. The enhanced Xterra also achieved a historical record for January, with sales of 6,446 units, a 19.2 percent increase versus last year.

Combined sales for the Nissan and Infiniti divisions for January were 54,534 units, an 8 percent increase versus last year.

Sales of the Nissan Sentra continued to gain momentum with sales of 8,010 units, a 12.1 percent increase over last year. In addition, Maxima sales were also strong, posting 9,242 units, a 36.4% increase versus last year.

Rounding out the division's results are the Frontier with sales of 5,320 units; the Pathfinder with sales of 5,292 units and the Quest with sales of 1,557 units.

Sales of Nissan's North American-produced vehicles for January totaled 35,015 units, which represents 60.5 percent of all Nissan vehicles sold in the United States.
