Toyota Starts 2002 With Strong January Sales
TORRANCE, Calif., Feb. 1 -- Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today reported a strong January, with sales of 126,508 units, up 7.1 percent over last January.
``Consumers are weighing purchases carefully and keeping a wary eye on economic indicators,'' said Jim Press, TMS executive vice president and COO. ``We're fairly confident about first-quarter sales which should provide a good gauge for the rest of the year.''
The Toyota Division enjoyed solid January sales, with 109,257 units, up 6.6 percent over the same period last year. The Lexus Division boasted a best-ever January, with a total 17,251 units sold, an increase of 10.4 percent.
Toyota Division's light trucks recorded a best-ever January with total sales of 51,366 units, up 13.6 percent from last year. The Tundra full-size pickup had strong January sales of 6,958 units, up 12.2 percent. The Sequoia full-size sport utility vehicle (SUV) posted 5,021 units sold, an increase of 11.8 percent. The Sienna minivan had strong sales of 6,766 units, up 9.1 percent. The Highlander mid-size SUV and RAV4 compact SUV recorded increased sales of 8,458 and 6,864 units, respectively.
Toyota passenger cars maintained their steady sales with the all-new 2002 Camry sedan leading the way. The Camry had a best-ever January, with 36,124 units sold, up 46.4 percent over the same period last year. Production of the Prius gas/electric hybrid sedan has been increased from 12,000 units to 17,000 units for calendar-year 2002, and best-ever sales of 1,954 units, up 50.5 percent, show that consumer demand has not wavered.
Passenger car sales remained strong for the Lexus Division, with 10,658 units delivered, up 19.0 percent over the same period last year. The all-new ES 300 luxury sedan posted 5,173 sales, an increase of 98.7 percent. Although winter is here, consumers are not easily discouraged, as sales of the all-new SC 430 hardtop convertible held steady at 1,467 units. The RX 300 SUV recorded 5,855 sales, an increase of 1.0 percent.
Sales of North American-built vehicles accounted for 56.1 percent of total January sales.
