WILKINS SHINES IN FLORIDA
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WILKINS SHINES IN FLORIDA
WOODBRIDGE, ONT., CAN. (January 22, 2002) –As part of its pre-season testing
program for the 2002 Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship season, the AIM
Autosport F2000 team entered Toronto native Mark Wilkins in two SCCA “Winter
National” club race events in Florida earlier this month.
At Sebring, the 18 year-old rookie qualified eighth on the grid and then
fought his way up to a spot on the podium with a third place finish. One
week later at Moroso Motorsport Park, Wilkins found himself competing
against a 48-car field packed with veteran racers. Wilkins dominated the
weekend by capturing the pole, the race win and recording the fastest lap of
the race.
“It was an awesome experience and was a great way to prepare for my debut in
professional-level F2000 competition” said Wilkins. “The set-up on the team’
s No. 34 Van Diemen Ford made me really confident, so I was able to just go
for it and have some fun.”
2002 will be Wilkins’ second season of racing with the Canadian based AIM
Autosport team. In 2001 he made his debut with AIM’s F1600 team,
campaigning the Canadian Formula Ford Championship. Under the direction of
team manager Keith Willis, Wilkins finished as the highest-ranked Canadian
driver in the series and runner-up for the overall Championship.
“Based on what we saw in Mark last year we knew he was ready to move up the
ladder” said AIM F2000 team manager Ian Willis. “Keith worked closely with
Mark last year and was really impressed with his maturity and no nonsense
approach to developing his race craft. Andrew [Bordin] and I took Mark to a
test in Georgia just before Christmas and we both came away convinced that
he will be a serious contender for the Rookie-of-the-Year title.”
AIM Autosport will again field a two-cars in the SCCA sanctioned Zetec
Championship, which will race at major venues in both the United States and
Canada. Willis is expected to announce who will pilot the team’s second car
within the next few weeks.
Established in 1995, AIM Autosport is widely recognized for its ability to
identify, train and manage emerging motorsport talent. Based in the Toronto
suburb of Woodbridge, the AIM driver development program has helped to
launch the careers of many of today’s top-ranked young Canadian drivers
including Andrew Bordin, Billy Asaro and Jonathan Macri.
