SELLERS TAKES LEAD IN NEW ZEALAND
FAIRFIELD, NJ. (January 21, 2002) – Team USA Scholarship winner and Formula
Ford 2000 Zetec Championship driver Bryan Sellers has taken the lead in the
New Zealand International Formula Ford Championship, following Rounds Five
and Six this past weekend.
In race one of the doubleheader, series point leader Fabian Coulthard took a
commanding lead, while Sellers battled local driver Brady Kennett for the
runner-up position. At the checkered flag, Sellers had finished second, for
his fourth consecutive podium finish. In the second race, Sellers got a good
start and began pressuring Coulthard immediately. On lap four, Sellers took
the lead going into the hairpin. Not giving up Coulthard retook the position
on the following lap. For the remainder of the race Sellers was involved in
an epic battle with Nicholas Ross and Nelson Hartley. On the final lap, Ross
was able to make a banzai pass in the hairpin stick, relinquishing Sellers
to third.
"It was just a cat-fight," said Sellers. "I could either finish third or
crash. I thought, man, I want to take this car to Manfeild [in two weeks'
time], so I took third."
Shortly after the race, officials met to discuss a possible infraction
during the doubleheader. Late Sunday MotorSport New Zealand announced that
double race winner Coulthard had been disqualified due to a "technical
irregularity". The disqualification promoted Sellers to second in both
races. The results give Sellers the series point lead heading into the
series finale doubleheader, February 2-3 at Manfeild.
"Oh well," said Sellers. "There's not much you can do except take the two
seconds. Heck, what kind a bad day is it if you're disappointed with two
seconds?"
