GORDON CELEBRATES DUPONT'S 200TH ANNIVERSARY
FROM DAYTONA TO DOVER, GORDON CELEBRATES DUPONT'S 200TH ANNIVERSARY IN SEARCH
OF FIFTH NASCAR WINSTON CUP SERIES TITLE
Harrisburg, NC -- Jeff Gordon took sole possession of third on the
all-time win list when he clinched his fourth NASCAR Winston Cup Series
championship in 2001. The next milestone? Seven.
And while Gordon heads into 2002 completely focused on achieving a fifth
title, which would put him one of three steps closer to tying seven-time
champions Dale Earnhardt and Richard Petty, he will help DuPont celebrate two
centuries as the world's premier science company en route to its next
milestone â“ 300!
They will begin by kicking off the season at Daytona with a special
"DuPont 200 Years" paint scheme for Speedweeks which concludes with the 44th
running of the Daytona 500 for which DuPont Chairman and CEO, Charles O.
Holliday, Jr., will serve as Grand Marshall.
Then in June, the brilliant paint scheme, accented by DuPontâ„¢
ChromaLusion® Neon Blasberry Prism, will reappear at Dover which is located
80 miles away from DuPont global headquarters in Delaware.
"We have a lot of momentum going into 2002 and we're really excited about
celebrating the 200th anniversary of DuPont," said Gordon. "We hope the race
that Chad Holliday starts, we are first to finish.
"Our goal this year is to compete for another championship. To do that,
we need to be competitive at each track we visit. From the high banks of
Daytona to the â˜Monster Mile' in Dover, we look to remain as committed to
success as DuPont has proven to be since the country was only 26 years old."
And as Gordon, DuPont and the No. 24 Winston Cup team work to advance
technologically into the future to successfully reach their next milestones,
they will have to keep their eyes on the competition. In NASCAR Winston Cup
Series racing, advancing in the areas of safety and performance are of the
utmost importance.
"Over the last year, we have really taken a deeper look at safety without
compromising the element of competition. This has been a challenge for NASCAR
and each team and driver. The partnership with DuPont has really assisted us
in the understanding of these areas."
From Nomex® brand fiber in driver suites and gloves, to the air dam on
the car which is reinforced with Kevlar® brand fiber, the fiber used in
bullet-resistant vests to make it stronger than steel on a pound-for-pound
basis without added weight, DuPont products have long been used to advance
safety, appearance and performance in the automotive industry.
"We're ready for Daytona and we can't wait to get back to racing," said
Gordon, two-time Daytona 500 winner.
Speaking of milestones, Gordon has 58 wins at age 30 and in nine full
seasons of Winston Cup competition. Could Gordon someday celebrate 200?
Maybe not in the way DuPont has, but possibly in pure Petty fashion!
