IHS's CEO Robert R. Carpenter Talks to The Wall Street Transcript

NEW YORK--Jan. 14 2002--The Wall Street Transcript has published an in-depth interview with Robert Carpenter, president & CEO of IHS, in which he talks at length about the company's future.
The entire 3,100-word interview is available free online at http://www.twst.com/ceos.htm
Carpenter gives an overview of the company. "We have two principal divisions: engineering and energy. Our IHS engineering history actually goes back more than 40 years ago, with some of the earlier products being in the microfilm area of aerospace engineering information. On the energy side, likewise, the history goes back through some acquired companies -- Petroleum Information/Dwights and others that likewise date back at least 40 years."
Carpenter explains, "We're a leader in providing information content software and services for engineering-intensive industries, as well as the oil and gas industry. We focus on being a critical process partner in industries such as aviation and aerospace, automotive, electronics, telecommunications, government and military, and oil and gas. By using our information, our software and our services, we help to revolutionize our customers' processes, be it design process, procurement process, or in the case of oil and gas, the exploration and production processes."
Looking forward, Carpenter states, "Our competitive advantages are very significant, particularly our customer relationships; the depth and breadth of our content; the investments we've made in our own internal systems; our solutions and training group; and our international network. These are very significant investments and it would take quite a bit of money if it was duplicable, which I don't think it really is. And by the time someone did try to duplicate it, we would have evolved in the direction that I've indicated."
This interview is part of a 109-page Publishing & Information Services Issue available at http://www.twst.com/info/info478.htm or by calling 212/952-7433.
