Delphi CEO Comments on FreedomCAR Agreement
TROY, Mich., Jan. 9 -- Battenberg made the following comments after attending the press conference held at Cobo Arena this morning.
Comments On FreedomCAR:
``We support the FreedomCAR program and other energy independence initiatives outlined by Secretary Abraham and our customers here today. We are committed to supporting their efforts and will continue to invest heavily in making alternative energy solutions, such as fuel cells, a viable alternative to current propulsion systems. We believe this partnership, and other DOE initiatives, will enable Delphi to accelerate our efforts to make SOFC and PEM technology an economically viable auxiliary power unit and propulsion solution.''
Comments On PEM and SOFC Systems:
``At Delphi, we are working on both SOFC and PEM. Both have potential applications. We are working on both types of systems because our customers are interested in developing both systems. We believe a dual development path for these technologies is very prudent. SOFC is more suited as an auxiliary power unit, while PEM is more suited for propulsion. Both are worthwhile alternatives that will continue to be developed.''
- Comments on Delphi Fuel Cell Initiatives:
- ``We have extensive involvement in fuel cell development:
- Delphi and Battelle, utilizing a 10-year, $74.6 million cost-share
contract from the DOE, will continue to further develop solid oxide fuel cell
technology.
- We are part of a fuel cell development project with the French Ministry of Research.
- We have partnered with BMW on a SOFC development project for the last two years. Renault also joined this effort.
- We have partnered with TotalFinaElf to collaborate on research and testing of fuels for use in fuel cell reformers.
- One of our executives, Peter Ciampa is president of the board of directors of the U.S. Fuel Cell Council, a group dedicated to developing fuel cells as an alternative to current propulsion and energy systems.``
