Specially Equipped Patrol Cars or Software!
One company has prided itself as being the only stolen vehicle recovery network under police control and a car owner's only choice for many years. While it was trend setting 16 years ago it has remained unchanged and has become passe.
The occurrence of one particular vehicle theft recently relinquished the older company's police control claim. The Richardson, Texas Police Department responded to a stolen vehicle report from a local car dealer. V.I.P. Finance reported the theft of two vehicles from their parking lot. One of the two stolen cars was equipped with an InterTrak(SM) stolen vehicle recovery device.
Richardson Police received the vehicle's account number from the car dealer and looked up the stolen vehicle's location on InterTrak's Web site. Within seconds the officers located the stolen vehicle and dispatched patrol cars to the computer indicated intersection. A few minutes later responding officers radioed back to say that they didn't see the stolen vehicle, they asked "Is this system really working?" A second computer inquiry revealed that the thieves had since moved their ill gotten gains behind a building at the same intersection.
The field officers said that they weren't sure if just a computer location was enough evidence for probable cause to search the premises since they couldn't see inside the building. After hearing this, the officer at the computer sent a command causing the vehicle's horn to honk and its lights to flash on the suspected stolen car. Within two seconds the car's horn started blaring and the field officers knocked on the door to investigate the disturbance. Two stolen vehicles were recovered with minimal vehicle entry damage and two suspects were arrested and taken to jail. From start to finish, the stolen vehicles were physically located within a half hour, not giving the bad guys enough time to disassemble them.
Forced in the past to drive specially equipped patrol cars to "sniff out" stolen cars, police are now starting to use more advanced technology that is less invasive on department resources. Rather than being required to use specially equipped patrol cars, police departments are starting to use an Internet-based tracking system so that their entire fleet can be used for recoveries. In addition they can be notified at the time of the crime as well as see and record the crime on their own computer. The records provide irrefutable evidence of the vehicle movements for court.
