Microtune and Aiptek Sign Agreement; Aiptek to Deploy Microtune's OneChip Silicon Solution to Enable Wireless Connectivity in Aiptek's Bluetooth Headsets
PLANO, Texas--Jan. 8, 2002--Microtune(TM), Inc. , a leading silicon and systems company that designs, manufactures and markets radio frequency (RF)-based solutions for the global broadband communications, automotive and wireless connectivity markets, today announced that it has signed a three-way Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) agreement with Aiptek, Inc. and Air2U, Inc. Under the terms of the multi-million unit MOU, Microtune plans to provide its OneChip silicon solution beginning in Q1, 2002 to enable wireless connectivity functionality in Aiptek's new Bluetooth-based headsets. With a commitment to providing affordable peripherals for consumers, Aiptek is a leading Taiwanese manufacturer that develops advanced peripherals and wireless products, including digital still cameras, cell phone headsets, video cameras, video phones, digital voice recorders and interactive pen-based recognition systems. The Aiptek headset design, featuring Microtune's OneChip MT0750 solution, will be displayed in Microtune's booth, number 15447T, in the Bluetooth Pavilion at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas during Jan. 8-11, 2002.
"As with our silicon tuner products, Microtune is committed to continued innovation in wireless communications ICs," said Douglas J. Bartek, Chairman and CEO of Microtune. "The OneChip MT0750, with its high-quality audio, was designed to offer a complete 'headset on a chip' solution, reducing size, total system cost, and power consumption of wireless audio products. It builds on the patent-pending wireless silicon technologies developed for our previous OneChip products and offers a price/performance solution designed to fuel the growth of the Bluetooth mobile phone and peripheral markets."
"Microtune's OneChip solutions provide for the economical integration of Bluetooth capability into our peripheral product lines, such as our new headsets," said Peter Chen, CEO and President of Aiptek. "We believe the wireless connectivity market for audio, imaging and video products offers Aiptek tremendous growth opportunities, and we are pleased to be working with Microtune as our wireless IC solutions supplier."
As part of Microtune's OneChip series of Bluetooth-qualified semiconductors, the MT0750 offers the world's smallest wireless communications solution designed with the highest level of integration available. As a strategic advantage, the MT0750 is the only solution on the market today integrating Bluetooth radio, baseband, flash memory and audio codec functions in a single, small BGA package. The MT0750's on-board flash memory, when loaded with Microtune's Bluetooth protocol stacks and headset profile, offers a fully embedded solution.
