L.A. Auto Show Sets Opening Weekend Attendance Record

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 7 -- Southern Californians confirmed their passion for the automobile in record numbers during the opening weekend of the 2002 Greater Los Angeles Auto Show. The opening weekend generated nearly an additional 20 percent increase in attendance over the 2001 show.

``We were astounded by the significant increase in attendance. Not in our wildest dreams did we envision such a surge,'' said Andy Fuzesi, general manager of the L.A. Auto Show. ``The jump in attendance may be a good indicator for renewed confidence in the future of our economy and nation.''

Consumers from throughout the Southland filled the manufacturer exhibits to check out the newest models. For many, the highlight was the more than two dozen production and concept vehicles that made their World or North American debut just days earlier to journalists attending the auto show's Media Days.

Amid the festive atmosphere were new security measures that not only increased safety and confidence, but improved traffic flow within the convention center's multiple halls. The record 347,734 visitors were appreciative of the added police presence and bag checks upon entering the show.

The L.A. Auto Show continues daily through Sunday, Jan. 13 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
