DETROIT, Jan. 7 -- Volvo Cars will break into the sport utility vehicle marketplace in 2002 with its new, all-wheel drive SUV, the Volvo XC90, and Continental Teves will be a critical part of it. Continental Teves will supply anti-lock brake systems with traction control and its Electronic Stability Program (ESP), enhancing Volvo's legacy of producing some of the safest vehicles on the planet. ESP is an interactive, high-tech safety system that senses possible loss of control. It activates the brakes and reduces engine torque to help drivers maintain control during the twists and turns of driving. "We are very pleased to be Volvo's brake systems partner for its new XC90," said William Kozyra, president, Continental Teves North America. "It is testimony to our technology leadership and engineering excellence when a car company that is the undisputed world leader in vehicle safety selects you to design and produce the brake system. We're delighted to be a major contributor." Volvo Car Corporation will begin assembly of the XC90 in 2002 at its Torslanda facility in Goteborg, Sweden. The North American market is expected to account for about 65 percent of total XC90 sales. The Continental Teves anti-lock brake systems will be manufactured at its Mechelen, Belgium facility. In a separate supply agreement, Continental AG will provide tires for the Volvo XC90. Continental Teves, headquartered in Frankfurt/Main Germany, is a unit of Continental AG, Hanover, Germany. With 2001 sales of approximately $9.9 billion (US), Continental is a world leader in the design, development and supply of critical brake and chassis systems that contribute to driving safety and comfort. Continental Teves' North American component is headquartered in Auburn Hills, Mich. For additional information visit these websites: http://www.conti-online.com and http://www.contitevesna.com .
