DETROIT, and MUNICH, Germany, Jan. 7 -- The BMW Group once again set up a new sales record in 2001, delivering a total of 905,653 BMW and MINI cars to customers -- an increase by 10.2 per cent over the previous year (822,181 units). This record figure results from the success of the BMW brand with sales up by 7.1 per cent to 880,688 units and from the successful sales of MINI cars amounting to 24,965 units. This was announced today by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Joachim Milberg, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, on the occasion of the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. In the last month of 2001 customer deliveries by the BMW Group increased by 7.1 per cent to 73,759 units, 65,861 of which were BMW cars (previous year 68,844 units) and 7,898 MINIs. Sales of the BMW X5 were also extremely positive, more than doubling to 82,705 units following deliveries of 38,282 units in the previous year. Capacities for production of the X5 at the BMW plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, were increased accordingly. Milberg: "The BMW Group sees developments in the year 2002 in a positive light. We expect ongoing growth and a further positive development of business." In the year 2002 the BMW Group will consistently continue its product and market offensive, introducing the new BMW 7 Series as well as the MINI brand into the overseas markets outside Europe. To meet substantial demand expected also in 2002, the BMW Group plans to work additional shifts at the various plants. In all, 28 additional shifts have already been agreed for this purpose with the Works Council at the BMW plants in Munich and Regensburg. And in response to significant demand for the new BMW 7 Series, special production activities are also planned at the Dingolfing plant.
