Toyota Grows North American Manufacturing Operations
ERLANGER, Ky., Jan. 7 -- Toyota produced nearly 1.1 million vehicles at its North America manufacturing facilities in 2001. Toyota, the fourth largest automaker in North America, currently has three vehicle assembly plants in the United States and one in Canada.

Over the past few years, we have grown tremendously, adding new plants and expanding existing ones to meet the demands of the North American market,'' said Teruyuki Minoura, Toyota Motor Manufacturing North America, Inc. president and CEO.

Last year's total North American production was more than 1,087,000 * vehicles. Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Indiana, Inc. (TMMI), located in Princeton, Ind. built the automaker's 250,000th Tundra in October 2001. The plant also celebrated its first full year of production for Toyota's full-size SUV, the Sequoia. TMMI produced 169,450 vehicles -- 98,137 Tundras and 71,313 Sequoias -- a dramatic increase over last year's 129,724 vehicles. Additionally, TMMI's $800 million expansion is nearly 90% complete. This expansion will make way for the production of the Sienna minivan in 2003.
Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky, Inc. (TMMK) successfully launched the all-new, redesigned Toyota Camry in July 2001, implementing thousands of manufacturing improvements. Last year TMMK produced 446,082 vehicles -- 271,961 Camry sedans, 81,309 Avalons, and 92,812 Sienna minivans -- at its Georgetown, Ky. facility, which employs about 7,800 team members. The plant also machines and assembles four-cylinder and V-6 engines (239,680 and 152,206 respectively for 2001CY).
Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada, Inc. (TMMC), located in Cambridge, Ontario, is currently home to the Corolla and Camry Solara. TMMC production remained steady with a total of 166,131 vehicles -- 126,438 Corollas and 39,693 Camry Solaras. This month marks the start of production of the redesigned Corolla and the all-new Matrix at TMMC.
Rounding out Toyota's North American production were vehicles produced at New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. (NUMMI), a joint venture between Toyota and General Motors in Fremont, Calif. NUMMI, which employs approximately 5,000 team members, produced 305,669 Toyota vehicles, including 142,959 Corollas and 162,710 Tacoma trucks. NUMMI also manufactured 46,025 Chevrolet Prizms (not included in the 1,087,332 production figure for Toyota). This month, NUMMI will launch the redesigned Toyota Corolla and the Pontiac Vibe.
Much of Toyota's expansion over the past year has taken place in the arena of vehicle part and component plants. Toyota Motor Manufacturing, West Virginia, Inc. (TMMWV) in Buffalo, W. Va., celebrated a milestone in May of 2001 when their team members became the first outside of Japan to build automatic transmissions for Toyota. Total production of automatic transmissions topped 130,040 units this year. TMMWV also machines and assembles four-cylinder and V6 engines. This year, production at this facility grew to 314,991 units -- 187,037 four-cylinder and 127,954 V6 engines -- up from 290,209 in 2000.
In January 2001, the automaker announced that TMMWV will bring production of engines and transmissions for the popular Lexus RX 300 sport utility vehicle to its Buffalo, W. Va. plant. Timing for Lexus engine and transmission production will coincide with the RX 300 vehicle production move to Toyota's Cambridge, Ont. plant in 2003.
Toyota also broke ground this year (June 2001) for a new V8 engine plant, Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Alabama, Inc. (TMMAL), in Huntsville, Ala. The plant will employ some 350 people and produce 120,000 engines a year beginning in 2003 for the popular, full-size Tundra pick-up truck made exclusively in Princeton, Ind. TMMAL will be the first plant outside of Japan to make V8 engines for the company.
Just last week, the automaker announced plans to build a truck deck plant in Baja California, Mexico to supply the Tacoma pick-up truck manufactured at NUMMI.
Additionally, Bodine Aluminum, Inc., in Troy, Mo., casts aluminum parts such as cylinder heads, intake manifolds and engine blocks. TABC, Inc. in Long Beach, Calif., manufactures truck beds, catalytic converters, coated substrates and steering columns. Finally, Canadian Autoparts Toyota, Inc. in Delta, British Columbia produces aluminum wheels.
By 2003, Toyota will employ some 33,000 people throughout North America
with direct investment topping $13 billion.
The company's North American-
built vehicles include the Avalon, Camry, Corolla, Sequoia, Sienna, Solara,
Tacoma, and Tundra.
The new Matrix joins the North American-produced lineup
in 2002, and beginning in the fall of 2003, the Lexus RX300 will also be
produced here.
