American Honda Rewrites the Record Book in 2001
TORRANCE, Calif., Jan. 3 -- American Honda set nine all-time sales records in 2001, including those for cars, light trucks and total vehicles, according to sales figures released today by American Honda Motor Company, Inc. It was the fifth straight record year for American Honda as total sales of 1,207,639 were up 4.2 percent from 2000.
``It was a remarkable year for both American Honda and the auto industry,'' said Dick Colliver, American Honda executive vice president. ``The credit goes to the resiliency of American consumers, who continue to show their confidence in our economy.''
- Record 2001 results included:
- total American Honda new car sales of 899,887, up 2.0 percent;
- total American Honda light truck sales of 307,752, up 11.2 percent;
- Honda Division sales of 1,037,170, up 2.1 percent from 2000 and setting
a new record for the fifth consecutive year;
- Acura Division sales of 170,469, up 19.5 percent from 2000, and breaking the previous mark set in 1991;
- Odyssey sales of 131,041, up 3.4 percent;
- S2000 sales of 9,682, up 42.4 percent;
- Insight sales of 4,726, up 24.8 percent; and,
- Acura TL sales of 69,484, up 3.7 percent.
Total American Honda December sales of 94,882 were up 7.8 percent, setting a new record for the month. Light truck sales of 30,701 were up 39.7 percent and recorded their best month ever. The all-new CR-V led the way with sales up 71.8 percent to 13,129, also an all-time record month. Odyssey sales jumped 33.5 percent to 12,538, as vehicles produced at the new Honda Manufacturing of Alabama plant began arriving at dealerships.
December Honda Division sales of 80,219 rose 7.7 percent and Acura
Division sales were up 8.0 percent to 14,663.
Both were new divisional
records for the month.
