MOSFETs With 10% Lower On-Resistance That Increase 42V Automotive System Efficiency
EL SEGUNDO, Calif.--Jan. 3, 2002--International Rectifier, IR(r), today announced three new 75V HEXFET(r) power MOSFETs that offer up to 10% lower (better) on-resistance, or RDS(on), over previous generation devices, and offer some of the best performance on the market.
As traditional belt-driven and hydraulic automotive systems are being replaced by electronically controlled systems, the electrical loads in cars are increasing rapidly. Car systems manufacturers are now developing 42V electronic systems to meet the new electrical load requirements.
With the emergence of 42V automotive electrical systems, automotive designers need 75V-rated power semiconductor devices that provide high efficiency in the challenging automotive environment. Applications include Integrated Starter Alternator (ISA), Electrical Power Steering (EPS) and other applications.
``The new International Rectifier 75V MOSFETs have been optimized to meet the requirements of 42V systems for high efficiency and ruggedness, enabling engineers to design-in avalanche conditions with a higher level of confidence in system reliability,'' said Tony Hendrix, Automotive Sector Director at International Rectifier.
Technical Highlights
The 75V-rated IRF3808, IRF3808S and IRF3808L are designed for 42V automotive systems, and are available in the TO-220, D2Pak and TO-262 package.
The 7 milliohms RDS(on) rating of these devices translates directly into lower power loss, increased efficiency and lower heat dissipation. The low 0.45 degrees Celsius per watt thermal resistance in the TO-220 package enables the removal of heat generated from the device more effectively, which keeps device temperature down, reducing heatsink requirements and increases reliability.
The new devices are fully characterized for repetitive avalanche up to 175 degrees Celsius, whereas the avalanche energy that the part can withstand is fully defined for a range of operating temperature, avalanche current and duty cycle conditions. The new devices are Q101-qualified.
``IR is the only company that guarantees operation of their parts under repetitive avalanche conditions up to maximum junction temperature,'' Hendrix added.
Pricing and Availability
The new devices are available immediately. Pricing starts at US $1.95 each in 10,000-unit quantities.
