NASCAR's Kevin Harvick Joins Flis Motorsports, RE/MAX Racing for Rolex 24 At Daytona
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Dec. 28, 2001) -- Flis Motorsports announced that 2001 NASCAR Winston Cup Rookie of the Year and 2001 NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division champion Kevin Harvick will join RE/MAX cofounder Dave Liniger, as well as ARCA RE/MAX drivers Rick Carelli and John Metcalf in the Flis Motorsports #90 Corvette at the Rolex 24 At Daytona.
"Racing in the Rolex 24 is something I've never done in my racing career," Harvick commented "I've watched it over the years on the couch waiting for racing to get started, so it'll be pretty neat to kick off my season a week early. Plus, it'll be something cool to add to my resume."
Harvick will travel to Daytona International Speedway next week to slide behind the wheel of Flis Motorsports' new #90 Corvette for the first time. The Daytona Beach-based team is the two-time Rolex Sports Car Series American GT champion and will field a two-car effort in the Rolex 24 At Daytona for the first time in 2002.
"Everybody here at Flis is ecstatic to have a young, aggressive talent who has a take-no-names attitude," Flis Motorsports co-owner Todd Flis said. "He's a professional. If he wasn't, he wouldn't be in the position he's in. Besides, if we need somebody to chase down another car, we know we can call on Harvick."
Flis Motorsports took second in the American GT class at the 2001 Rolex 24 At Daytona, losing a strong lead when its #09 Camaro suffered severe damage in a collision with a prototype.
Harvick is the fifth NASCAR Winston Cup driver to commit to starting off their 2002 SpeedWeeks a little early by racing in the historic twice-around-the-clock race, with more announcements from drivers and teams expected before next weekend's January Test Days at Daytona International Speedway.
The 40th Anniversary of the Rolex 24 At Daytona will kick off the 2002 Rolex Sports Car Series season, as well as SpeedWeeks at Daytona International Speedway. Tickets are currently on sale for the Rolex 24 At Daytona and may be purchased online at www.daytonainternationalspeedway.com or by calling the Speedway ticket office at 386-253-RACE. The Rolex 24 At Daytona will be broadcast live on Speedvision.
