New Range Rover SUV Will Feature Side Impact Restraint from Simula and TRW
PHOENIX--Dec. 18, 2001--Simula, Inc. (AMEX:SMU) announced today that Simula and TRW, Inc. will provide Simula's Inflatable Tubular Structure (ITS(R)) head protection system to be offered as standard equipment on new Range Rover vehicles, which will initially go on sale in the United Kingdom in February, 2002. Simula has commenced production deliveries of its ITS product to Range Rover through its first-tier partner, TRW. The ITS units are manufactured at Simula's Ashington, England, manufacturing facility and then shipped to TRW's Occupant Restraint System division, in Alfdorf, Germany, for assembly and distribution to the Range Rover production facility.Simula President and CEO Brad Forst noted that the Range Rover line is part of the Land Rover family of vehicles, a subsidiary of Ford Motor Company's Premier Automotive Group. "This marks the first time Simula will provide its head protection system to a Ford-owned vehicle model," Forst said. He added that the new ITS-equipped Range Rover will eventually be sold in 124 countries.
Since June 1998, TRW and Simula have been working together to offer global vehicle manufacturers Simula's ITS, as well as its next-generation advanced head protection system (AHPS), which is also for side-impact and rollover protection.
The core markets for Phoenix-based Simula are aerospace and defense safety systems, and automotive safety systems. Simula's core technologies include inflatable restraints, energy absorbing seating systems, advanced polymer materials, transparent and opaque armor products, personnel protective equipment and parachutes.
