Delphi And Ginger...What a pair

TROY, Mich., Dec. 4 -- Delphi Automotive Systems announced today that it will supply electronic components for the Segway(TM) Human Transporter (HT), a self-balancing electric-powered transportation machine. Delphi assisted in the development of key elements of the unique electronic system used to control the human transporter, including the control unit circuit boards and the user interface components. "Delphi is excited that this high-tech innovation can be leveraged off of our electronics capabilities and rich experience as a systems integrator," said J.T. Battenberg III, chairman, CEO and president, Delphi Automotive Systems. "With its advanced balancing capabilities and maneuverability, the Segway HT has potential widespread application in a variety of industries. In fact, we're evaluating how Delphi can use them in our facilities." Delphi provided expertise in component engineering, component sourcing, testing and manufacturing process development to improve both the reliability and quality of the Segway HT. Delphi's participation with Segway Company is in line with the company's portfolio strategy to more sharply focus on expanding selected technologies and capabilities beyond current automotive segment boundaries. "With Delphi's advanced electronics capabilities and experience, it was a clear choice to select them to assist with Segway Company's complex electronics system, which is an integral part of our human transporter," said J. Douglas Field, Segway Company's chief engineer. In March 2001, Delphi announced the creation of a "new markets" business unit demonstrating its commitment to growing its high-tech product sales and restructuring its portfolio. Today's announcement falls under Delphi's new markets business wins and will help further diversify its customer base. As Delphi transitions its portfolio to higher-tech, higher-margin businesses, the company plans to expand its market coverage in selected traditional automotive markets, as well as build sales in new high-growth markets. Delphi currently has products and intellectual property in its portfolio that can be applied to several market segments, including: connection systems, sensors and micro-electronics. Delphi serves several industries beyond automotive, including: commercial trucks; computing; telecommunications; medical; defense; aerospace; recreation; and consumer appliances. Delphi plans to expand its business in new markets through organic growth and through acquisitions.
