Toyota Reports Record November Sales

TORRANCE, Calif., Dec. 3 -- Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today announced record November sales of 138,183, up 9.7 percent over last November's record-setting sales.

``Industry sales steamed ahead in November, driven by great values and record-low interest rates,'' said Jim Press, TMS executive vice president and COO. ``A bright spot in an otherwise lagging economy, the auto industry is on target to achieve its second-best year ever.''

Calendar-year-to-date (CYTD) sales total 1,597,052, an increase of 7.5 percent over the same period last year.

Both TMS sales divisions enjoyed best-ever November sales. The Toyota Division recorded 118,530 units sold, up 9.6 percent. The Lexus Division posted sales of 19,653, an increase of 9.9 percent.

Toyota Division light trucks led the sales pace with strong November sales of 57,530 units, up 22.5 percent over last year's record-setting November. Tacoma compact pickup posted sales of 12,948, an increase of 3.3 percent. The Tundra full-size pickup recorded November sales of 10,056, up 37.9 percent. Toyota sport utility vehicles (SUVs) were popular with consumers, with strong Highlander mid-size SUV sales of 7,442 units. The Sequoia full-size SUV enjoyed record sales of 6,248 units, up 24.3 percent over the same period last year.

Toyota passenger cars continued their steady sales. The all-new 2002 Camry recorded strong November sales of 29,174 units, up 0.9 percent. Corolla enjoyed a solid November with sales of 19,171 units sold, an increase of 10.6 percent over the same period last year. The Prius gas-electric hybrid sedan tied its best-ever sales record, set just last month, with sales of 1,580 units, up 59.8 percent over last November.

The Lexus Division was paced by best-ever November passenger car sales of 12,676, up 30.9 percent. The all-new ES 300 luxury sedan continued steady sales with 5,353 units, up 81.4 percent. The SC 430 hardtop convertible also posted strong sales with 1,728 units sold.

Sales of North American-built vehicles accounted for 60.4 percent of total November sales.
