PORSCHE 911 RACERS, TEAMS TAKE EIGHT 2001 GRAND-AM TITLES

ATLANTA – November 29 – Led by Virginia’s G&W Motorsports, which earned
no less than five 2001 Rolex Sports Car Series championships with two
different Porsche 911 race cars, Porsche private racing teams helped
the sports car marque take home eight season titles in the two Grand
American Road Racing Association’s series.

In the Rolex Sports Car Series GT class, Phoenix, AZ, Darren Law
piloted the G&W Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R to the drivers
championship, with co-driver Matt Drendel, from Hickory, NC, finishing
second, just 14 points behind.

With stiff competition from the BMW M-3 V8 and the other
Porsche 911 GT3 R’s, G&W team owner Cole Scrogham realized the
challenge at the first event of the year – the 24 Hours of Daytona.

“We saw the BMW put a lap on all the other competitors at Daytona
before they broke, and the other Porsches were fast and reliable, so
to win the title, we knew that Darren and Matt would have to drive
mistake-free, and we would have to be perfect with our car preparation.
It turned out just the way we hoped,” said Scrogham, whose team just
opened a new race shop at Virginia International Raceway.

G&W Motorsports also won the GT Team Championship, and Porsche
outscored BMW to win the Manufacturers Championship. The manufacturers
title was made possible not only by the G&W Motorsports results, but
with the help of the other Porsche 911 GT3 R teams, which finished in
five of the top six team positions. All of those top Porsche teams
scored victories during the year, including Zip/Pumpelly Racing
(drivers Spencer Pumpelly and Steve Ivankovich), Fordahl/Crazy
Redhead Racing (Kim Hiskey and Randy Pobst), and both entries from
Orbit Racing.

The #43 Orbit Porsche 911 GT3 RS, was driven during the season by
Leo Hindery and Peter Baron. They were aided at the 24 Hours of
Daytona by NASCAR star Kyle Petty, and at Watkins Glen by Petty
and NASCAR teammate John Andretti, who took the car to an important
win. The #42 Orbit car, with Richard Millman and Tommy Byrne at
the helm, also finished in the top six in the team points.

In the GTS class, G&W Motorsports, with drivers Steve Marshall,
from Christiansburg, VA, and Cort Wagner, from Santa Monica, CA,
drove their Porsche 911 GT2 to consistent top-three finishes to
lead their team to its second championship, despite the presence
of the higher-horsepower Saleen S7R. Marshall and Wagner also put
Porsche on top in the manufacturers points chase, beating Saleen by
a single point.

In the Grand-Am Street Stock Series, the Speedsource Porsche 911,
with team owner Sylvain Trembley, of Pompano Beach, FL, and David
Shep, of Toronto, Ontario, at the wheel, scored seven Grand Sport
class wins on their way to a triple championship win. Trembley
won the driver’s title, while the Speedsource won the Team
Championship and Porsche the Manufacturers Championship

All drivers and teams will receive their awards at the Grand-Am
end-of-the-year awards banquet, which will take place in Daytona
on January 4 during the 2002 Daytona 24 Hours practice days.
