STEELE TAKES 61ST "TURKEY NIGHT GRAND PRIX"
EBBERTS WESTERN TITLIST AS RAIN FORCES LAS VEGAS CANCELLATION
Dave Steele of Tampa, Fla. and Danny Ebberts of Canyon Lake, Calif. shared
the spotlight as the WorldCom National and Western Midget Car series
concluded its 2001 campaign this past week.
Steele won Thursday night's 100-lap 61st Annual "Turkey Night Grand Prix"
presented by K & N Filters at the Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway and Ebberts
emerged as the WorldCom Western Midget Car Champion as rain forced
cancellation of Saturday night's scheduled series finale at the Las Vegas
(Nev.) Motor Speedway "Bullring."
Driving one of only two Mopar-powered cars in the 100-lap Irwindale race,
Steele passed Kasey Kahne on the 22nd lap and never looked back in his
Finish Line Towing/Mopar/Penske Shocks/Northside Propane Mopar/Beast. J.J.
Yeley finished ahead of Kahne, Michael Lewis and Aaron Fike.
Ebberts, who finished 18th at Irwindale, finished the 2001 season with a
65-point margin over WorldCom Western Midget Car runner-up Josh Wise.
Bobby East of Brownsburg, Ind., who posted the fastest qualifying time for
the "Turkey Night Grand Prix," finished 10th to earn the Don Basile "Rookie

HUNT CAPTURES IRWINDALE & TITLE; LAS VEGAS RAINED OUT
Thursday night's 30-lap victory at the Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway
solidified Tony Hunt of Fair Oaks, Calif. as the 2001 USAC Western Sprint
Car Series Champion. Rain forced cancellation of Saturday night's scheduled
series finale at the Las Vegas (Nev.) Motor Speedway "Bullring," leaving
Hunt with a 36-point margin in the final standings over runner-up Jeff Gardner.
The title is Hunt's second, having previously won the 1992 USAC Russell Pro
championship. Hunt was Thursday's fastest qualifier in the event which was
part of Irwindale's "Turkey Night Grand Prix" program, then led the final 17
laps of the feature in his Justice Brothers/Torco Oil/Simpson/Eibach
Shaver/Beast after passing Troy Cline on lap 14.
Bud Kaeding finished second in Thursday night's race and was followed by
Jeff Gardner, Cline and Casey Mears, who was making only the second Sprint
