Forbes.com Says:GM Hits The Gas, Ford On The Brakes
While Ford Motor seems stuck in neutral, General Motors is roaring ahead.
First GM hires Bob Lutz, the former president of Chrysler, as vice chairman and new product boss. Then Lutz fires off a memo to GM product executives proclaiming the key to success is great cars--cars that look good and run well. His thoughts reversed 20 years of product direction at GM, including the last seven under Ron Zarrella, chairman of its North American automotive operations. No surprise then that Zarrella has now exited the automaker to return to his former employer, Bausch & Lomb , as chairman and chief executive.
GM also set in motion the 0% financing campaign that has now engulfed Ford and DaimlerChrysler . Ostensibly designed to keep car sales moving forward in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, D.C., it is causing GM's competitors to burn through cash faster than an RV sucks up gasoline.
The free financing, combined with a strong reception for its new trucks, is finally helping GM to stem its long slide in U.S. marketshare.
