Auto Club: Southern California Gas Prices Fall to 30-Month Low
LOS ANGELES--Nov. 13, 2001--Southern California Thanksgiving travelers who plan to drive can expect to benefit from average pump prices that they haven't seen since June 1999, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California monthly Fuel Gauge Report. The Southern California average price for regular or self serve unleaded gasoline is $1.35, down 19 cents since the October average of $1.54 and down 62 cents since June. Statewide, the average gas price dropped 16 cents to $1.44.
Southern California average sits lower than the state average due to higher gas prices in Northern California. Motorists in the Bay Area are paying an average of $1.76, down 13 cents from October. The lowest average price in Southern California can be found in La Habra, where regular self serve gasoline is selling for $1.19 a gallon.
Nationally, the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline has dropped 15 cents to $1.19.
"A soft economy and resulting lower demand for fuel continues to push gasoline prices lower," said Jeffrey Spring, Auto Club spokesman. "While some consumers may still be hesitant about travel during this holiday, the lower gas prices certainly make it more attractive."
Also, the White House said today it would begin filling unused capacity in the nation's strategic petroleum reserve by buying oil on the world market. This action, as well as OPEC's reported intentions to trim production by as much as 1.5 million barrels a day, is intended to help stabilize world oil prices," Spring added.
