FOR RELEASE: November 12, 2001General Motors Metal Fabricating Division's Flint Metal Center Recommended For ISO 14001 Certification
FLINT (Mich.)-GM Metal Fabricating Division's Flint Metal Center has been recommended for ISO 14001 certification by British Standards Institute (BSi), the world's leading management systems registrar. The local stamping plant was recommended for certification on November 8, after an intensive three-day audit of its environmental management system. The official certificate will be received by January 2002.
ISO 14001 was developed to promote a common approach to environmental management similar to the QS-9000 quality management for the automotive industry. The system is designed to help companies reduce the cost of waste management, save on energy and materials, and lower distribution costs. It also provides companies with a framework for continuous improvement of their environmental management systems.
"Achieving ISO 14001 certification is a big win for us; however, it is just the first step in an ongoing journey," says Jim Glynn, plant manager. "Our commitment is to continue improving our environmental management system, which will prove to have a positive impact on our environment, business performance, and our customers."
Flint Metal Center provides stamping and assembly of sheet metal panels for GM trucks and midsize vans, as well as stamping and welding of passenger car engine cradles and midsize van frames. It employs approximately 2800 people.
GM Metal Fabricating Division, headquartered in Troy, Mich., provides many of the dies as well as major and minor sheet metal parts for the majority of General Motors vehicles produced in North America. The division has 16 operating facilities located in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Missouri, Kansas and Canada.
