Grand-Am Cup Announces Final Point Standings
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Nov. 7, 2001) - The Grand-Am Cup Street Stock Series has announced its final point standings for the 2001 season team owner, driver and manufacturer championships. Powell Motorsports, Speedsource and Planet Earth Motorsports captured both the team owner and driver championships in their respective classes, while Villaconn International and King Motorsports split the Sport Touring class honors.
Canadian-based Powell Motorsports #11 Corvette dominated the Super Grand Sport class in 2001, winning six of 10 races this season. The team's pair of drivers, Doug Goad, of Farmington Hills, Mich., and Devon Powell, of Port Perry, Ontario, will also share in the class driver championship after tying in the standings. The team's strong showing on the season also gave Chevrolet the manufacturer championship in SGS, topping Porsche by six points.
Motorsport Technologies finished second in the SGS team standings, 28 points back, with team owner Dino Steiner, of Deland, Fla., taking third in the driver championship race.
South Florida's Speedsource captured both the team owner and driver championships in the Grand Sport class. The team's pair of Porsche 911s scored seven class victories during the season. Team owner Sylvain Tremblay, of Pompano Beach, Fla., took the driver championship over teammate David Shep, of Toronto, who finished 39 points back. Porsche also took the top manufacturer honors in the class.
The Sport Touring class held the tightest competition in the series. Both Villaconn International and King Motorsports were atop the team owner standings with 89 points. Both teams scored two victories during the season, as well as two second-place podium finishes. The tie between the two closely matched teams would come down to third-place podium finishes. Villaconn stood on the podium in third at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, but King had no other podium visits, with their next best finish coming over the weekend in Daytona with fourth place. That third-place finish broke the tie, giving Villaconn the team owner championship.
However, King Motorsports will not end the season empty handed. King drivers Bob Endicott, of San Pedro, Calif., and Mike Van Sicklen, of Nashville, Tenn., earned the top-two spots in the ST driver standings, respectively. King, which races an Acura Integra R, also helped Acura earn the manufacturer championship, topping BMW by four points.
Planet Earth Motorsports picked up the top team owner honors in the Compact 2000 class, as well as the driver championship for Will Nonnamaker, of North Canton, Ohio. The team's trio of Acuras, which picked up six wins this season, aided in Acura's second manufacturer championship of the season.
With four race wins to its credit, the Honda of America Racing Team finished second in the Compact 2000 team owner standings, 15 points back.
