Law Wins Championship!

Law Wins Championship

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (November 3, 2001) - Darren Law accomplished exactly what he set out to do at the beginning of the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series 2001 season.

By completing just one lap under green at the series finale at Daytona International Speedway, Law would clinch the GT class drivers championship. He did just that.

"I just wanted to get the race started and finished," Law said. "I wanted to get the one lap in and then be able to concentrate on racing."

The #81 Motorola/Commscope/G&W Porsche GT3-R was the fastest GT car in Saturday morning's practice. Since time did not allow for a typical qualifying session, the #81 started on the GT pole due to G&W's top position in the team points.

"We had a great car all weekend," Law said. "The last few practices we had, we just ran a few laps and came in. We didn't want to push it."

Law started the race in the #81 Porsche and ran for one hour and forty minutes. On lap 41, Law brought the GT-leading Porsche in for a full pit stop and driver change. Law's teammate Matt Drendel came out of the pits in third and held the Porsche at the position.

"Matt did a great job keeping the car in the front of the pack," Law said. "It was a really close race in the GT class. We all pulled together to keep us in contention."

With only about an hour left in the race, the #81 came in under a full-course yellow, once again putting Law behind the wheel.

Law continued to gain on the GT leader, but ran out of time. Law crossed the finish line only seconds behind the leader, finishing second in the GT class.

"It was a great season," Law said. "I couldn't have asked for a better team, or better car. It feels great to be the champion."
