Tony Kanaan and the #55 Hollywood/Mo Nunn Racing Honda-Reynard clocked the
eighth-fastest lap of this morning's opening practice session for Sunday's
500-mile CART FedEx Championship Series season finale at California
Speedway.  Kanaan toured the 2-mile high-banked oval in 32.127 seconds (an
average of 227.360 mph) this morning, a time that was 14th-best among
drivers in today's morning and afternoon session times combined.

It was announced earlier today that Kanaan will drive Mo Nunn Racing's
Pioneer/WorldCom-sponsored entry beginning with the 2002 CART season as his
sponsor for the past two seasons, Hollywood, is joining forces with Mo Nunn
Racing to run Felipe Giaffone in the Indy Racing League beginning next
season.

Teammate Casey Mears, in the #66 Pioneer-WorldCom/Mo Nunn Racing
Honda-Reynard, was 13th-fastest this morning and 20th overall today in
32.324 seconds (225.975 mph).  Kenny Brack was fastest today at 31.676
seconds (230.597 mph).  Bruno Junqueira was second at 31.718 seconds
(230.292 mph), followed by Paul Tracy at 31.771 seconds (229.908 mph).

Practice resumes at 8 a.m. PST (11 a.m. EST) Saturday with qualifying set
for 11:15 p.m. PST (2:15 p.m. EST).  Qualifying will be shown on ESPN2 at
1:30 a.m. EST.  Race time Sunday is 12:30 p.m. PST (3:30 p.m. EDT) with a
live broadcast set for ESPN.

"We're not quite where we want to be in the order, but, to tell you the
truth, I don't ever pay attention to the running order at these kinds of
races until it really matters - the last lap on Sunday afternoon.  That's
when I won at Michigan in '99.  That's how (Patrick) Carpentier won at
Michigan this year.  It's a long race and to get to the end and be in a
position to win, you have to have a good race car.  We spent the better part
of the day working on the race setup.  We did well in the morning.  Then we
tried a lot of different things in the afternoon - none of which worked too
well.  So at least we learned something, and we could cross those things off
of our list.  We'll see what we can come up with for qualifying, but that's
not so important here this weekend."
