Grand-Am Announces 2002 Racing Schedules

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Nov. 2, 2001) - Grand American Road Racing Association announced its 2002 schedules today for both the Rolex Sports Car Series and Grand-Am Cup Street Stock Series. The Rolex Series will run a 10-race schedule, while nine confirmed races for Grand-Am Cup were announced. The announcement of a 10th race is expected at a later date. Both schedules will be preceded by the traditional Rolex 24 At Daytona January Test Days.

"Our schedule for the Rolex Sports Car Series is our best ever," commented Grand-Am President Roger Edmondson. "We have added three new races at new venues, which expand our series with the rebirth of an historic Canadian race course, a major California presence, and a beautiful American track nestled in the heart of America's Mid-Atlantic region."

The 10-race Rolex Series schedule includes a balanced mix of track configurations. "We have three stops at Daytona International Speedway's 3.56 mile road course - arguably one of the most dynamic tracks in the world," he continued. "We have four traditional road courses with Virginia International Raceway, Le Circuit Mont Tremblant and two stops at historic Watkins Glen International. Rounding out the schedule, we have three stadium road courses at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Phoenix International Raceway and California Speedway near Los Angeles, where we will bring the excitement of road racing directly into major urban market areas with purpose-built race facilities and amenities."

Grand-Am will share its stage throughout the season, offering race fans a variety of motorsports entertainment. Races at Homestead-Miami and California Speedways will be double-header weekends with the Indy Racing League. These races will offer a unique racing weekend with Grand-Am road racing and IRL oval racing sharing a twin bill. Grand-Am will also be in front of NASCAR Winston Cup fans twice during the year - at Daytona for the Paul Revere 250 in July and again at Watkins Glen in August.

The Ferrari Challenge Series, sanctioned by Grand American, will bring its unique racing program to selected Rolex Series events, giving avid sports car lovers a full dose of Italian passion. And the Grand-Am Cup Street Stock Series will share the track at seven Rolex Series races this year.

Grand-Am is splitting the street stock series field into two separate races at some 2002 events with the introduction of its Twin 250s format. "We saw substantial growth in the Grand-Am Cup Series last year," noted Grand-Am Cup representative Scott Peterson. "The Twin 250s format will have the field split into two groups based on speed and performance, with each group getting its own 250-mile/three-hour race."
