Grand-Am Cup Classes Get New Names, New Racing Format
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Nov. 2, 2001) - The Grand-Am Cup Street Stock Series will remain basically unchanged in its rules structure for the 2002 season, but there will be some very noticeable other changes. First and foremost is the renaming of the series' four racing classes that more clearly describes the two divisions of competition.
Super Grand Sport (SGS) will become Grand Sport I (GS I)
Grand Sport (GS) will become Grand Sport II (GS II)
Sport Touring (ST) will become Sport Touring I (ST I)
Compact 2000 (C2K) will become Sport Touring II (ST II)
"With the Grand Sport and Sport Touring divisions we are more clearly defining the groups of competition for our fans," Grand-Am Cup representative Scott Peterson stated. "We'll still have four class championships, but with the new names and the Twin 250s race format, fans will find it much easier to keep track of the action."
The Twin 250s is a new format Grand-Am intends to implement at about half of the Grand-Am Cup races next season. "Twin 250s will be two separate 250-mile races with a three-hour time limit," Peterson added. "One race will be for the GS I and GS II cars. The other will be for the ST I and ST II cars."
At all other events, a single combined 250 mile/three-hour race will be held, except for the season finale at Daytona where a 600-mile/six-hour format will wrap up the year.
As announced in September, Hoosier Racing Tires will continue to be the sole supplier of racing tires in the Grand-Am Cup Series through the 2004 season. Tosco 76 has also been announced as the Official Race Fuel of the series. That agreement, which makes 76 the only legal fuel, also continues through the 2004 season.
"Hoosier and Tosco 76 are the kind of marketing partners every series wishes it could have," Grand-Am President Roger Edmondson noted. "Both companies provide quality products and professional distribution. They care about the future success of the sport, and they both make financial contributions toward the awards programs that go straight to our competitors."
