Fontana, California -Michael Andretti and Team Motorola are hoping to end
their inaugural Champ Car season with their sixth podium finish of 2001. The
team has remained consistent throughout the season scoring a victory in
Toronto; runner-up finishes in M
ilwaukee, Elkhart Lake and Surfer's Paradise and a third place finish in
Vancouver. "Based on our first year together and as competitive as the
series is, we've done a good job," explained general manager Kim Green. "But
I know Michael and the team are o
nly totally satisfied if they could have number one on the car for the 2002
season."
Andretti and his Team Motorola colleagues posted a runner-up effort in last
weekend's race in Surfer's Paradise, Australia and are optimistic about their
chances at the California Speedway for this weekend's Marlboro 500. "I've
not been very lucky at Font
ana in the past four years," explained Andretti. "It seems like if it can go
wrong, it has, but I'm hoping to change my luck this weekend." Andretti has
always qualified well for the season finale 500-miler, posting a seventh
position start or better but
those results unfortunately have not translated into any top finishes. "The
objective this weekend, and every other race weekend, is to win," said Kim
Green. "Our secondary objective is to finish with more points than Helio
Castroneves and solidify a th
ird place finish in the CART FedEx Championship. I think that would be a
great achievement for Michael and Team Motorola considering this is our first
year together as a team."
Gil deFerran clinched the CART FedEx Championship last week in Australia and
Kenny Brack has the second place position locked up with 163 points but
Andretti and Team Motorola can secure a third place finish with a solid
showing in Fontana. "We've had rac
es that we just gave points away," said Andretti. "Now when you are down to
the last weekend you realize how valuable those points would have been in the
championship. But we're focused on scoring points at Fontana and I think we
have a definite shot to
wrap-up third in the Championship this weekend."
Andretti and Team Motorola will begin practice on Friday, November 2, 2001 at
9:45 a.m. with qualifying scheduled for Saturday, November 3 at 11:15 a.m.
The race will be held on Sunday, November 4 at 12:30 p.m. local time and will
be shown live on ESPN a
t 3:30 p.m. ET.
