"SHAKEY-QUAKEY SCHOOLHOUSE" AT IRWINDALE SPEEDWAY

"SHAKEY-QUAKEY SCHOOLHOUSE" AT IRWINDALE SPEEDWAY
FOR SO CAL PIPE TRADES 200 – SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 3

Irwindale, Calif. - - The Southern California Pipe Trades 200 for NASCAR Super Late Models at Irwindale Speedway will be unique in a number of ways, among them it will be the longest (200 laps) and richest ($20,000 plus in prizes) race ever staged for that racing division at the Speedway. For another, it will mark the first appearance of a very special sort of "pre-race entertainment", the Pipe Trades' own "Shakey-Quakey Schoolhouse".

The "S-Q-S" is one of two such educational units that the Southern California Pipe Trades has that are making the rounds of local schools in association with the Los Angeles County Fire Department. It is truck-mounted version of a "little red schoolhouse" with desks and a chalkboard that school kids can clamber into and experience what an actual earthquake feels like, complete with falling objects (soft stuffed animals) and truly authentic earthquake noises.

"The first time through it's a little bit rattling," said the Pipe Trades' Sid Stolper. "But then the kids get the hang of it and they're all quickly back in line for 'a ride', we've shown thousands of school kids what an earthquake feels like and instructed them about what to do (and not to do) when an earthquake strikes with these special teaching units."

The "Shakey School" house will visit the Speedway on Saturday, November 3. Gates to the facility will open at 4:00 pm and racing will start at 7:00. "Kids" of all ages are invited to stop by the Chalet Village area of the racetrack (located right behind the grandstands) for a look and a chance to experience an exciting (but perfectly safe) ersatz temblor for themselves.
