TQ FINALE PRECEDES MIDGETS SATURDAY AT BAKERSFIELD
Kasey Kahne of Enumclaw, Wash. swept to victories in Saturday night's USAC
WorldCom Western Midget Car and Western Sprint Car feature events at the
Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway. It marked only the 14th "sweep" in 123 USAC
Sprint/Midget "doubleheaders since 1956.
USAC participants are gearing for another "doubleheader" this weekend,
when
the WorldCom Western Midget Cars and TQ Midget Cars compete at the 1/3-mile
dirt Bakersfield (Calif.) Speedway. A 20-lap TQ and 30-lap Midget Car
feature are planned.
Kahne caught Michael Lewis on the 12th lap of the Irwindale Midget Car
race
and led the rest of the way to win the 30-lapper in the Steve Lewis
Ford/Beast/Performance Racing Industry Pink Ford/Beast. Dave Steele finished
second ahead of Lewis, fast qualifier Travis Miniea and Aaron Fike.
In the 35-lap Sprint car feature, Kahne trailed Bobby McMahan for the
first
14 laps, then led the rest of the way in his Consani Construction
Chevy/Beast. Troy Cline finished second ahead of fast qualifier Tony Hunt,
McMahan and Jeff Gardner.
Danny Ebberts of Canyon Lake, Calif. continues to lead the WorldCom
Western
Midget Car standings going into this Saturday night's Bakersfield race. He
finished 17th at Irwindale, his point lead over Alex Harris slipping to 36
points in the process. Harris was seventh in the Irwindale feature.
Hunt, of Fair Oaks, Calif., extended his Western Sprint Car point lead
over
Jeff Gardner to 14 points going into a November 17 race at Tucson, Ariz.
Walt Johnson of Sun Valley, Calif. hopes to lock up his first USAC
driving title at Bakersfield. He leads WorldCom TQ Midget runner-up Steve
Lambert by 49 points going into the series finale.
Jay Drake, of Val Verde, Calif., who was released from Indianapolis
Methodist Hospital Saturday and is recuperating at home from injuries
suffered in an October 20 Midget car accident at Terre Haute, Ind., is the
only other driver to record a "doubleheader" sweep this year. He scored
Sprint and Midget victories at Rossburg, Ohio June 22.
